Capitals are found at the top of columns and pilasters. The three basic capital designs are Doric Ionic and Corinthian. Variations and combinations of these capitals are common. Capitals are often decorated with shells acanthus leaf floral designs egg and dart repeats vines and stems. The centre of the Capital is still further decorated by the addition of masks and symbols. The volutes are the most varied in descriptions sometimes replaced by cornucopias dolphines chimeras and garlands. Neckings are rare on Corinthian capitals but egg and dart mouldings are reminiscences of the Doric style.
